Belonging

"True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are; it requires us to be who we are.” Brene Brown

We were designed to belong. Yet, for so many of us, we've not had solid roots from the get go (for numerous reasons.) And we learned to seek for this sense of belonging elsewhere and everywhere. Searching for a place to connect, we hustle, settle, conform, and often times betray ourselves for just a morsel of love and acceptance. Sometimes we end up in relationships that all but destroy our very existence. Why? Well, for me it was about survival. To be seen and loved by another was an internal driving force in my first marriage.

Yet, looking back, I can now see clearly how I sacrificed myself out of fear. Desperate to belong, I lost my footing. I was out of alignment. I ignored my intuition. I lost my Self. And since NO ONE else could sense the evil I felt in my own home, I doubted my inner knowing. Eventually, in due time truth is made known. Hard decisions are made, and we wake up. And in waking up, I learned I needed to belong first and for most to the One who formed me, and secondly to myself. I learned to be here. To be me. And, as Maya Angelou once said I now understand that "I am only free when I realize I belong no place...I belong every place...no place at all."

Belonging is about being myself. It’s about being okay with mself. And it’s about liking who I am.
